We had a restful night in a Comfort Suites 30 miles east of Reno. Which meant that our first stop today was in The Nugget Casino in Reno. And we were not the only ones there at 10 in the am! I spotted a slot machine named the Maltese Fortune with dogs all over it and that was my machine. I put my $$ in and had a blast for the next half hour or so. We left a little lighter in the wallet but that’s Reno.

As we entered California we had to stop at an agricultural check point. Lucky for us the goat I bought in Montana wasn’t considered an exotic animal. Also, it’s a good thing we had no fruit or plants.  So onward to Tioga Lodge on Mono Lake for the night. It is in the town of Lee Vining which is close to the entrance to Yosemite. On the way we traveled through more beautiful mountains areas where the type of trees growing made them look black.

Unfortunately, the park ranger recommended that we not make the drive up to Yosemite because it was snowing. It will be clear tomorrow, fingers crossed. We took two other excursions. One was the June Lake Loop which took us up close and personal to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The other was to the Major Tufas on the shore of Lake Mono. They are vertical towers, some as tall as 30 feet. They are formed under the lake when the freshwater springs mix with calcium and carbonate and react to form a calcium carbonate salt deposit called a tufa. As the lake shrunk they appeared on the shore area. They are extraordinary!

Last but not least, I had a bear encounter in downtown Lee Vining! I lived to see another day and I hope that includes Yosemite.
